Scholarship Application Opens Pathways for Aspiring Physicians
The Dr. Wael Sakr Scholarship for Medical Students reflects Dr. Wael Sakr’s longstanding commitment to medical education and scientific research. Over more than four decades, Dr. Wael Sakr builds a career spanning pathology, cancer research, medical education, and academic leadership.
Dr. Wael Sakr completes his medical training at the University of Damascus before pursuing postgraduate education in the United States. His training includes an Anatomic Pathology residency and a Surgical Pathology fellowship, leading to an academic career at Wayne State University School of Medicine. He later serves as Chairman of the Department of Pathology and continues his leadership in medical education as Dean of the Wayne State University School of Medicine.
Dr. Wael Sakr also contributes extensively to prostate cancer research, including research examining disparities in disease incidence, progression, and outcomes among African American men. His scholarly work includes more than 200 peer-reviewed publications, along with contributions to medical textbooks and specialized pathology chapters.
Eligibility and Application Details
Eligible applicants must be currently enrolled undergraduate students at an accredited college or university, pursuing a pre-med or comparable pathway toward an MD or DO career. Applicants must demonstrate good academic standing, genuine commitment to medicine, and completion of all application requirements.
The scholarship provides a one-time $1,000 award. Applications must be submitted by April 15, 2027, and the winner is scheduled to be announced on May 15, 2027.
