Mizuho Securities’ Global Markets department provides customers in Japan and around the world with a broad range of financial products and services, including public and corporate bonds, equities and derivatives. Simulations for derivatives pricing and quantification of market risk and counterparty credit risk involve more than 360 million calculations per day, with the volume increasing each year.
As its business grows, Mizuho Securities needs to scale its system resources and strengthen the infrastructure needed to sustain consistent compute performance in order to deliver higher-value financial products and services to a wider customer base. Against this backdrop and with an eye toward the next generation of financial systems, Mizuho Securities will deploy the HPE Cray XD2000 featuring direct liquid cooling.
“HPE systems have long underpinned Mizuho Securities’ financial business, and we are delighted that Mizuho Securities is the first in Japan’s financial sector to select HPE Cray XD2000 featuring direct liquid cooling as the foundation for its next stage of growth,” said Hirokazu Mochizuki, senior vice president and managing director for HPE Japan. “As Mizuho Securities advances its global business, we see consistent, sustainable compute performance as vital to supporting increasingly demanding financial simulations. Drawing on more than 50 years of liquid cooling technology and HPC expertise, HPE looks forward to deepening this longstanding relationship and supporting the company as it continues to grow and deliver greater value to its customers.”
To meet current cooling requirements while accommodating future system expansion, Mizuho Securities is building a new data center designed for liquid cooling. The HPE Cray XD2000 is a density-optimized, scale-out compute system. In this configuration, direct liquid cooling removes heat directly from key components, delivering up to 20% performance improvement per kilowatt over air-cooled solutions and consuming 15% less power1. With the new system, Mizuho Securities expects 1.6 times the performance per server node compared with its current environment2.
“Mizuho Financial Group is advancing its Global Corporate and Investment Banking strategy, which integrates commercial banking and investment banking capabilities on a global scale,” said Ken Utsunomiya, Operating Officer, CIO, CPrO, Head of Global IT and Head of Global Operations, Mizuho Securities. “To execute this strategy and deliver higher-value financial products and services to more customers, strengthening our compute infrastructure by transitioning from air cooling to liquid cooling and ensuring reliable operations is essential to our continued business growth. Through this initiative, we will enhance our ability to address increasingly demanding and complex financial simulation requirements and deliver even greater value to our customers.”
HPE Services will provide monitoring and maintenance support, including real-time visibility into the operating status of the direct liquid cooling and power infrastructure and automated coolant leak alerts, to help ensure the operational stability of the organization’s first direct liquid-cooled system.
The initial deployment will comprise eight server nodes, with Mizuho Securities planning to expand the number of servers and racks in stages while assessing the benefits in its production environment. The company plans to validate the effectiveness of direct liquid cooling through this new system as it explores the use of GPU-accelerated compute for its future private AI infrastructure.

Footnotes
1 Based on estimates from internal performance testing conducted by HPE in April 2023 that compares an air-cooled HPE Cray XD2000 with the same system using direct liquid cooling. Using a benchmark of SPEChpc™2021, small, MPI + OpenMP, 64 ranks, 14 threads estimated results per server, the air-cooled system recorded 6.61 performance per kW and the DLC system recorded 7.98 performance per kW, representing a 20.7% difference. The same benchmark recorded results of 4539 watts for the air-cooled system’s chassis power and the DLC system recorded 3862 watts, representing a 14.9% difference.
2 Compared with the current environment comprising HPE Apollo 2000 and HPE ProLiant systems.
