Kapsch TrafficCom Brings Interoperable V2X Technology to Maricopa County to improve roadway congestion and safety

ATLANTA, Oct. 13, 2026
- Kapsch TrafficCom to supply roadside units (RSUs) along the Avondale corridor for Arizona’s flagship V2X multi-vendor deployment project
- Deployment supports pedestrian safety, freight efficiency, and transit reliability across the Phoenix metro region
ATLANTA, Oct. 13, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Kapsch TrafficCom will supply Roadside Units (RSUs) for the Avondale corridor as part of the Maricopa County Department of Transportation’s (MCDOT) Connected Vehicle Acceleration Zone (CVAZ), a large-scale, multi-vendor deployment of interoperable vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology across the Phoenix metropolitan region.

The goal of the project is to make Maricopa’s roadways safer for pedestrians and other vulnerable road users as travel demand continues to climb.
MCDOT is working with a number of vendors on the USD 19.6M CVAZ initiative under a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT).
“Programs like CVAZ have the unique opportunity to prove interoperability at scale,” said JB Kendrick, President of Kapsch TrafficCom North America. “MCDOT’s approach to measuring outcomes across every vendor in this deployment is the kind of rigor our industry needs, and it’s the same standard we brought to the Columbus Smart Corridor.”
Once complete, the CVAZ deployment will connect V2X technology across up to 750 intersections and approximately 400 vehicles. Kapsch RSUs will be integrated with CVAZ to support four key V2X use cases across the region: Emergency Vehicle Preemption (EVP), Transit Signal Priority (TSP), Freight Signal Priority (FSP), and Vulnerable Road User (VRU) safety alerts. Project partners include the cities of Phoenix, Avondale, and Tolleson; Arizona Department of Transportation; Valley Metro Regional Public Transportation Authority; Maricopa Association of Governments; University of Arizona; and University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute.
A division of Kapsch TrafficCom in Vienna, Kapsch TrafficCom North America is based in Atlanta, Georgia and serves Canada, the United States, and Puerto Rico. The region is home to 700 team members across 25 offices and processes more than one billion customer transactions in the US every year.
